Les Bleus make light work of Iceland with emphatic 5-2 win.
Iceland’s Euro saga was the best feel-good story of the tournament, but the quarter-finals was as far as it get. Rampaging Les Bleus completely dismantled the sturdy Iceland defence with the score reading 4-0 already after first 45 minutes.
Olivier Giroud opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Antoine Griezmann started his show. First, he set up Paul Pogba and Dimitri Payet in 20′ and 43′, before he got on the scoresheet himself with a beautiful chip in ’45.
Iceland entered the second half more determined and were rewarded with a goal, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson capping off a nice set up play.
However, their celebration was short lived as Olivier Giroud got his second just three minutes later.
In a match in which France completely dominated every aspect of the game it was hard to pick the standout performers as there were plenty of candidates in the French ranks.
- Matuidi sends Giroud through for France’s opener, Pogba heads in second
- Payet and Griezmann strike in quick succession to make it 4-0 at the break
- Sigthórsson responds, Giroud strikes back, Bjarnason gets Iceland’s second.
